India's Solar Curtailment Crisis: Why MNRE Says Battery Storage Is Now the Price of a Bankable PPA

India curtailed 8,133 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar power between April and June 2026, close to 11% of all the solar generation available in that window, even as electricity demand hit a record. Speaking at the BNEF Summit in New Delhi on 21 August, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's (MNRE) Renewables Secretary, Santosh Kumar Sarangi put the consequence bluntly: projects without battery storage are "unlikely to find buyers." India Adds a Border-Zone Security Clearance Step for New Solar and Wind Projects

India's Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has introduced new guidelines governing where solar, wind and hybrid renewable energy projects can be built near the country's international borders, the Line of Control (LoC) and the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Reported in detail in national press from early August 2026, the guidelines build on an MHA office memorandum dated 5 June 2026 and add a security-clearance step that developers planning ground-mount or large open-access capacity in border-adjacent districts now need to plan around.

Battery Storage Tariff's Are Rising Again

Tariffs discovered in India's standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) auctions fell to a record low of Rs 1.48 lakh per MW per month by the end of 2025, then reversed. By August 2026, Gujarat's latest tender discovered a lowest tariff of Rs 231,989 per MW per month - roughly 57% higher. For any commercial or industrial (C&I) buyer benchmarking storage costs, the number that matters is not last year's low; it is this one.
